FROM THE AIRPORT
If you travel by plane, you will land in Belgium at Brussels Airport (preferred airport close-by) or Brussels South Charleroi Airport (90 km outside of Leuven).
Brussels Airport (BRU)
Brussels Airport (BRU) is located in Zaventem, between Leuven and Brussels. Travelling to and from the airport is easiest by train or car.
- Take the Leuven bound train at level -1 of Brussels Airport.
There will be vending machines where you can buy your ticket from Brussels to Leuven.
Alternatively, you can buy your ticket online. Please make sure to buy a ticket with the mandatory Brussels Airport Supplement (Diabolo). Your ticket will cost approximately € 15. You will need to scan your ticket at the access gates. Good to know: trains to Leuven usually have Luik (Liège, in French) as its destination, but they stop in Leuven en route. The Brussels-Leuven trip takes about 20 minutes. Do not take the train going to Louvain-la-Neuve since this train will not take you to Leuven. - You can also take a taxi from Brussels airport. This will cost around € 70.
Brussels South Charleroi Airport (CRL)
Brussels South Charleroi Airport (CRL) is located in Charleroi, 90 km from Leuven (Travelling to and from the airport is easiest by bus and train or car.
*IMPORTANT NOTE: Brussels South Charleroi Airport is not located at the train station Brussels South (Bruxelles-Midi) and is not close-by Brussels or Leuven (do not get blind sighted by its name).
It is not possible to take the train directly from Leuven to Brussels South Charleroi Airport or vice versa.
- If you want to take the train to Leuven, you first need to take a bus to Charleroi Central station. There you can take a train to Leuven. You can buy a ticket (at a vending machine or online) which combines the bus to the Charleroi Central station with the train to Leuven. The Charleroi-Leuven trip takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes in total.
- You can take a taxi from Brussels South Charleroi Airport. This will cost around € 130.
